Below is a list of all the acronyms used on this site. We hope that these definitions will help you better understand the soldier's classifications on the site.
DNB - Died, non-battle
A person who becomes a casualty due to circumstances not directly attributable to hostile action or terrorist activity. Also called NBI, Non Battle Injury.
DOC -
DOI - Died of Injuries
DOI relates to someone who survived to reach a medical treatment facility, but died of injuries later.
DOW - Died of Wounds
DOW relates to someone who survived to reach a medical treatment facility, but died of injuries later.
FOD - Finding of Death
When an MIA, Missing In Action person is declared dead, they are declared FOD.
KIA - Killed In Action
KIA denotes one to have been killed in action on the battlefield, at the hands of hostile forces.
MIA - Missing In Action
MIA is an armed services personnel who are reported missing during active service.
POW - Prisoner Of War
A POW is a person, whether civilian or combatant, who is held in custody by an enemy power during or immediately after an armed conflict.
